The 2006 season demonstrated once again that the league has matured into a deep, veteran group that competes until the end. But once more, the Master Blasters ultimately showed that they stood above the rest, outlasting Red Storm in a close September duel.
At least five or six teams had an opportunity to win this year, as the race was close through the early summer months. In fact, this is the fourth out of five years where there was no runaway winner. The Master Blasters, however, grabbed the bull by the horns, and in a brilliant tactical display of trading, acquired a murderers row of Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Lee, and Carlos Delgado, along with four aces:
Dontrelle "DWI train" Willis, Roger Clemens, Aaron Harang, and Chris Capuano.
With this formidable lineup, the 'Blasters won six categories outright, and finished at least in the top four in three other categories. Although Red Storm also assembled a powerful team, ultimately they were outdistanced in the last few weeks of what had turned into a two team race.
This is the fourth championship for the
Master Blasters, tying them with the Mandel franchise for the most overall VLFB titles. The 'Blasters have also now finished in the money an unprecedented eleven times.
The other money winners also established impressive team benchmarks. Red Storm's second place finish was well earned and is the highest placing for this franchise. The KrackerJacks have now finished in third place two of the last three seasons. And the BarBarryans, while not able to defend their back-to-back championships, have now finished in the money six consecutive seasons and are the first team to achieve this milestone since the league expanded to twelve teams. Congratulations are also extended to the Marauders, who have now joined the ranks of money winners for the first time.
On a dubious note, the battle for the cellar between Double D and the Monarchs went to the second tie breaker. The first tie breaker, head-to-head competition ended in a 5-5 tie. The second tie breaker, comparing highest finishes went the Monarchs and placing him in 11th place. The Monarchs best category finish, 4th place in Batting Average proved too much for Double D to top with his 6th place finish in Wins, his best category.
