The Monarchs took home the championship this year in impressive fashion, totaling 111 out of an available 120 points, and outpacing the second place Barbarryans by 25.5 points, thereby setting a new league record for margin of victory. This represents the second championship for the Monarchs franchise, having won previously in 1998.
For the first two months of the season, there appeared to be no dominant team with first place held at times by five different teams. The Monarchs broke out from the pack and assumed first place on June 3. By the end of June, they had begun to separate themselves from their pursuers and steadily increased their lead as the season progressed. They won the weekly standings each week during August and September, except for the week of September 15th, by which time their lead was virtually insurmountable.
As would be expected from a team accumulating such a high point total, the Monarchs demonstrated balance in notching 56 batting and 55 pitching points, leading in both of these categories. The offense was powered by the long ball (256 total HRs), primarily provided by Richie Sexson (45 HRs, 124 RBIs, 97 R), Jim Thome (47/131/111), and Luis Gonzalez (26/104/92). Jay Payton (28), and Jeff Bagwell (22), who was acquired during the season also provided ample HR power. The pitching staff established a Vagrant league record, amassing 105 wins, and was led by young hurler Mark Prior (18 W, 1.10 ratio, 2.43 ERA, 245 Ks). Steve Traschel (16), Al Leiter (15), Bret Myers (14), and phenom Dontrelle Willis (14) provided ample support in the win column.
The Barbarryans finished in second place for the second time in three years and also notched a third straight money finish. Shus Crew completed a remarkable turnaround and finished in third, having been in eleventh place as late as June 10th (and fifth place on September 15), demonstrating once again the wisdom of not conceding when prospects for a money finish appear dim. Closely bunched behind in fourth and fifth places were the Master Blasters and Red Storm, with a total of four points separating third from fifth and some tight category finishes also coming into play. The Master Blasters also finished in the money for a third consecutive year, although their fourth place finish may seem a bit of a let down, having been back-to-back champions the two prior years
