Where the 2001 campaign was a run away for the Master Blasters, 2002 was a much different season. Holding on to first place by the skin of his teeth the Master Blasters did manage to capture their second title in as many years by a mere three points. This was the narrowest margin of victory in the 12-year history of the league. As late as September 20th, the Master Blasters total of 96.5 was a mere ½ point better than the Futurians 96.0 total. With just 10 days left in the season first place was still up for grabs.
The swing categories that decided the winner were stolen bases and ratio. In stolen bases, the ‘Blasters and Futurians were going head to head and tied at the top of the leader board with 153 each. In the final ten days the ‘Blasters amassed 16 base swipes for a total of 169 and the Futurians finished the category in second with 162. This was a two-point swing that would have left the Futurians just a point shy of a first place tie.
The second category of ratio went in the Master Blasters favor as well. With just 10 days remaining in the season the ‘Blasters were getting 8 points from a 1.314 ratio. His pitching staff came up big with a 1.118 ratio over 76 moving his final ratio to 1.2983. Had is pitching staff failed him the last ten days he could easily have seen his ratio fall from 1.314 to lower than 1.3275 causing him to lose 2 points.
The mark of a true champion is coming through in the clutch when pressure is on and the speed and pitching of the Master Blasters allowed him to take home the gold.
Honorable mention goes to Double D who tied his highest finish mark of third place set back in the inaugural 1991 season and the BarBarryans who finished in the money for the second straight season.
