In an awesome display of statistical dominance, the Master Blasters won the 2001 championship and came closer to winning all of the available points in every category than any Vagrant League team has to date, and perhaps came closer to this Fantasy Baseball holy grail than many thought possible. The Master Blasters garnered 115 out of a total of 120 available points, easily outdistancing the second place Barbarryans by 21.5 points and the third place Mutts by an eye popping 37.5 point margin.
In amassing this total, the Master Blasters showed remarkable balance by totaling 57 batting and 58 pitching points. The offense was led by the quartet of Lance Berkman (34 HRs, 126 RBIs, 110 R, .331 avg.), Albert Pujols (33/118/102/.321), Chipper Jones (38/102/113/.330), and Bobby Abreu (31/110/118/.289, 36SBs). The pitching staff did not have any one dominant hurler, instead relying on overall quality and balance, and was paced by 20 game winner Jon Lieber and 16 game winners Daryl Kyle and Javiar Vasquez, the latter of whom probably had the best statistical season of this squad in posting a 3.42 ERA, 1.077 WHIP and 208 Ks. Rob Nen contributed from the bullpen with 45 saves.
The Master Blasters also achieved further distinction by leading in the weekly standings from wire to wire. This victory represents the second championship for the Mandelbaum franchise, having also won in 1994 under the name Flatulators. The Barbarryans enjoy their first money finish after an unsuccessful first tenure, having rejoined the league in 1999. Rounding out the money finishers were Shu's Crew, placing fourth while showing resilience in fighting their way upwards from 9th place where they were situated as late as July 16th, and the Arms & Hammers finishing in 5th and placing in the money for a fourth consecutive season.
On the other end of the spectrum is the Ryan Express, a founding member who will say goodbye finishing in 8th place in its final season, after fading out of contention despite being in fourth place as late as August 14th.
