For the second time in three years and the third time in nine years Grand Salami (the same owner won under different names) took home the bacon moving into first place on May 4th and was never really seriously challenged after that. Grand Salami proved you don't have to be the best at everything to win, just close to the best as they only came in first in one of the ten categories.
The team was propelled by it's offensive might amassing 51 out of 55 total hitting points with the second place offense taking only 44 points. No other team as many as even 40 hitting points. Hitting standouts were Greg Vaughn with 45 homers although he hit only .245, Larry Walker with 108 runs, 37 homers, 115 RBI's, 11 stolen bases and a .379 batting average despite only getting 438 at bats. He is truly amazing. Other standouts were Tony Womack with 72 stolen bases and Fernando Tatis who had a breakout season with 104 runs, 107 RBI's, 34 homers and 21 stolen bases.
In support of that offense, a solid, if not spectacular pitching staff was anchored by Kevin Millwood with 18 wins, 205 K's, an ERA of 2.68 and a WHIP of 1.00 and strongly supported by Jose Lima who amassed 21 wins.
Unfortunately for other owners in the league, Grand Salami was able to put this team together without sacrificing the future. At the end of the season only 4 of the 29 total players on their roster had to be thrown back into the auction the following season and of the remaining 25 players on the roster only 5 had salaries greater than $10. It seems that they are in a great position to repeat. Lets see if they can take the pressure to repeat and become a modern day dynasty just like the Yankees.
